Sabriel, winter 2011

Garth Nix's books are a constant inspiration to me and in particular his stories about the Abhorsen, a people that practice the reverse methods of a necromancer, who lay the unruly dead back to rest. They are a fantasy series filled with beautiful descriptions and I often draw scenes or characters from these stories. Here is the father Terciel holding his daughter Sabriel the main character in the first book 'Sabriel'. The next in the series are 'Lirael' and 'Abhorsen'.

Sleepy Hollow

Mrs Van Tassell from Sleepy Hollow, inspired by the film and entry for a 2011 Halloween competition on DeviantArt.com. I wanted to get an aristocratic look to this painting, like the old oil portraits you see in stately homes. I have a long way to go in terms of my realistic style as I have neglected it for a long time but I enjoyed this non the less.

Street Justice

Sketches for the Street Justice clothing brand, in the end they went with a design that incorporated just the musketeers hands holding the swords in the air.

Musketeers

Well I can say that most of the autumn of 2011 consisted of Musketeers.
Children's athor Billy Bob Buttons approached me about making a cover illustration for his new book Tor; Assassin Hunter. I obliged happily and set to work painting the character Tor (above).
His weapon a classic rapier sword is entwined with the Swedish flower 'Fritillaria', an unusual tulip type flower with a chessboard-type pattern over the petals.

September

Cowboy sketches, just rough outlines, trying to capture expression quickly and simply.
